How to Identify Earwigs
Earwigs are reddish-brown insects with pincers at the rear of the abdomen. They're harmless to people but show up in large numbers in mulch, under stones, and along foundations where moisture collects, then wander indoors looking for cover.
Signs You May Have a Problem
- Clusters found under mulch, stones, or landscape edging when disturbed
- Presence near foundation cracks, door thresholds, and window wells
- Higher numbers after irrigation or a wet week
Why It Matters
Earwigs don't bite or cause damage indoors, but heavy outdoor populations near the foundation turn into a steady trickle of indoor sightings. A quarterly exterior barrier treatment, paired with reducing mulch-to-siding contact, keeps populations from building up next to the house.
